VPD adapts to the shape of your body, but when exposed to impact, the material stiffens and has extreme impact absorption properties. Review: After taking a few repeated hits to my elbows it was only a matter of time before something broke. I thought I'd give these a go after being a fan of 661 evo style adaptive padding for years. These offer great protection, but the fit isn't quite perfect - it improves over time though as you warm up. I put these on for the decents and feel reassured that they're there. Not ideal for all day use and don't work under my relatively baggy long sleeve Jersey...so I've moved to a 3/4 instead.
