Description: The near universal fitment of the Thule 968 Free Way cycle carrier allows it to be fitted to many saloon cars which will not support other Thule carriers, or simply as a more cost effective alternative. Attaching via load straps onto the top, bottom and sides of the tailgate. Once tightened the carrier remains stable and secure, allowing transport of up to 3 bikes (60kg load capacity). All contact points are rubber coated to prevent damage to the car or bikes during transit, whilst the folding design enables easy storage when not in use. Supplied with bike mounts, suitable for all frames and a securing strap to keep everything in place. Designed for flat crossbars, bikes with non standard frames (WSD, full suspension and BMX) may require an adapter (981) to allow for correct fitment, cycle locks (538) are also available for increased security. Fitting: Rear mounted cycle carriers are not suitable for the majority of cars with rear spoilers. Rear lights and number plate must not be obscured, if this is the case a lighting board and additional number plate are required by law. Review: My research on bike racks was so time consuming I could write a book on them/get a job in a bike shop. Already having a roof rack for my husband's car I wanted a relatively inexpensive bike carrier for my car too to make life a bit less complicated. This does everything I expected. It comes nearly completely assembled(unlike others that come in a box of bits). It is solid and well made. It attaches quickly and solidly to my car. It comes with a leaflet(also on Thule website) listing loads of makes and models it will fit so chances are it will fit my next hatchback.The only thing it doesn't do that more expensive Thule ones do is lock to the car but it fits easily,can be folded and put in the car if required. It might need an additional registration plate depending on how many bikes/where the bikes hang however it is easier to fit/more secure than some of the high mounted carriers.

Review: Not too difficult to fit, and the structure seems solid enough. However, after one use, carrying 2 adult bikes over smoother roads, I know have to pay £££ to get my car fixed. The hooks that hook into the top of the hatch bent both my car roof and the top of the hatch itself - I'm unsure whether the plastic coating the hooks was too thick or whether it stuck to the bodywork for some reason, but it stuck in place such that when the book was opened, it bent the bodywork. Furthermore, the vertical load was transferred down through two hard rubber feet, which in turn made small indentations in the top of the hatch. wider, and perhaps softer, feet would have spread the load more evenly across the bodywork. To stress, the bikes were not especially heavy and were a long way within the limit of the carrier, there were no unusual bumps or jolts on the 30 mile journey, and the carrier was fitted as per the instructions. It's unclear how the responsibility ought to be shared between Thule and the car manufacturer (Vauxhall), but beware and be careful if/when you use this carrier
